These fish feeds are cheap in Nigeria. However, they may not be worth the money.
While I don’t discourage you from looking for them, I do know that quality is more important than quantity.
There are trusted brands that fish farmers have used for years to ensure they’re the best. They are also more natural and contain whole ingredients that closely match the food the fish would eat in nature, according to experts.
These quality fish feeds contain krill and herring, squid and algae. They also tend to have higher levels of protein and fibre. They are also less processed than low-quality fish feed.
You may be thinking about the high price. These high-quality fish feeds are expensive because they are often packaged in small bags. This means that your fish will get less food. That is doubtful.
Although the fish feeds I have listed here can be either pelletized or granulated they are more dense and higher in protein and whole foods. This ensures your fish have less food but get the full benefits, which leads to faster growth and development. This roundup of fish feed will provide you with good value for your money.

Types Of Fish Feed In Nigeria
Commercial fish feed can be made in either extruded (floating/boilant) or pressure-pelleted. The types most common in Nigeria are sinking wafers and flakes as well as pellets, pellets, and gelatin. Other types, such as freeze dried, frozen, and live feed are also available, but they are not very common in Nigeria.
1. Sinking Wafers
Sinking wafers, as the name suggests, are dry fish feed that sinks to the bottom of your pond. This fish feed is preferred by Nigerian catfish farmers.
2. Flakes
Flakes are a good choice for farmers who want to grow fish that can float in the water surface or sink below the surface. Flakes can be a bit more expensive because of the high manufacturing costs. However, you can monitor your fish’s feeding intensity and adjust this type of fish food accordingly.
3. Pellets
Pellets are very similar to flakes but they can be made into smaller, more dense balls or sticks, much like dog kibble.
Pellets can either float on the surface of the pond or sink below depending on how they are made. They are great for feeding larger fish like South American Cichlids.
4. Gel Food
Gel food is a powdered form of fish food that can be mixed with boiling water to make a stiff gelatine. This fish feed is great for sick fish, as it can be mixed with medication for easy delivery.
Consider these Factors Before You Choose A Fish Feed Type
Before you decide which fish feed or brand of feed you want to use, you should know the basics.
Availability
Before you choose your favorite fish feed brand, the first thing to look at is its availability in the market. It is not a good idea to buy a product that, after your fish have exhausted it, is no longer in stock.
Some of the feed brands listed above may not be available depending on where you live. Skretting, Coppens or any other brand should be researched before you make a decision. Also, ensure that it is easy for your fish to purchase another set if they have exhausted the first set.
Prices
The price is another important factor to consider when selecting a fish feed brand. Before you decide on a brand, consider your budget and how much money you can spend on the feed.
For instance, just because I have enough money to buy Skretting throughout my production cycle does not mean that you have the same amount.
Before you kickstart, plan your expenses and ensure that the funds are sufficient to cover the project.
Quality
You should also consider the quality of the feed. The feeds we have mentioned are high-quality, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that they are free from any adulteration.
Make sure to research the quality and protein levels of any feed before you buy it.
If you’re looking to purchase large quantities of feed, and can locate the manufacturer’s facility, you should go there. If they don’t sell, they will refer you to their distributor, where you can buy the original feed.
Conclusion
Your fish farm’s success does not depend on what type of fish feed you use. There are other factors that can contribute to a fish farm’s success.
Depending on what aspect of fish farming your are interested in, all the feeds listed above can be very effective.
Skretting is used for hatching fish. It lasts for about two months. Coppens is another alternative to Skretting.
As my fish grow larger, I switch to other brands of fish food.
My clients are advised to use Skretting and Coppens as their first 2 months of life (from fingerlings to juvenile). They can then change to Aller Aqua, Blue Crown or Vital if they have the funds.
These feed brands work well for me, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they will work for others. These feeds have been tried and tested and worked well for me over the years.
